John McCain won most of the major California newspaper endorsements just as Barack Obama did on the Democratic front. California newspapers which endorsed McCain (in order of circulation from largest to smallest) were: the Los Angeles Times, the San Francisco Chronicle, the Sacramento Bee, the San Jose Mercury News, the Contra Costa Times, the Riverside Press Enterprise, the Los Angeles Daily News, the Fresno Bee, and La Opinión.
The San Diego Union Tribune did not endorse any candidates. While the Orange Country Register did not actually endorse Ron Paul, their editorial about him on January 26 was the most favorable. In particular, they wrote: “If there is any candidate who in many ways comes closest to the libertarian values to which the Register’s editorial pages are devoted, it is 10-term Texas Republican Rep. Ron Paul.”
